Things Fall Apart Summary

Without the support of the villagers, Okonkwo decides to take matters into his own hands. As the Christian religion gains legitimacy, more and more Igbo people are converted. Inside, though, Okonkwo feels painful guilt and regret.

More so than for his own son, whom he considers weak. Quickly, he is on track to earn titles within the community, markers of power and influence. At the gathering, Ogbuefi Ezeugo, a noted orator, announces that someone from the village of Mbaino murdered the wife of an Umuofia tribesman while she was in their market.

Unoka is lazy, pleasure-seeking, and debt-ridden. He finds his twelve-year-old son, Nwoye, to be lazy, so he beats and nags the boy constantly.

When Okonkwo was a child, another boy called Unoka agbala, which is used to refer to women as well as to men who have not taken a title. He shoots at her, but misses. He wins glorious wrestling victories, leads his village to war, and builds a thriving farm.

Okonkwo is completely unlike his now deceased father, Unoka, who feared the sight of blood and was always borrowing and losing money, which meant that his wife and children often went hungry. He begins by asking a wealthy clansman, Nwakibie, to give him seed yams to start a farm.

After he kills the head messenger, he hangs himself in his compound.
